Employer Identification Numbers and trusts
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a federal tax ID number issued by the IRS. The IRS states that an EIN is generally needed to administer certain trusts.
Whether a particular trust needs its own EIN depends on the type of trust and how it is taxed. That question calls for the appropriate tax analysis — ask a tax professional about your situation.
Applying directly with the IRS
- The IRS issues EINs directly and does not charge a fee for them.
- A third party can apply for you only with your signed authorization.

Our EIN help Not currently offered
Trust With Us does not currently offer EIN assistance. If we offer it in the future, it will be optional, any charge will be identified as a service fee — the IRS does not charge for an EIN — and it will require your signed authorization.
Please do not send a Social Security number or other taxpayer ID through our inquiry form.
